The Community Vision Statement

"Walking the Talk"

Our Ethics ~ Our Foundations, Our Heart.

As at Sunday, November 21, 2004

1. We hold the Earth and all beings thereon to be Sacred, alive and

conscious. All our dealings with issues arising out of the care of the Earth

& the beings on, around & within her, local or global, will be guided by that

belief, taking their needs into consideration as equal partners.

  2. The purpose of the community is to live in harmony with each other and

the land and all beings on the land in a relationship of supportive care and

co-operation

  3. The community holds the belief that each person is unique and has

inherent attributes & skills.

PRINCIPLES ~ How we put the Ethics into Practice

  1. We commit to holding a willingness to work with any challenges either

personally or communally that arise as a result of living in community and

take responsibility for our part in that.

  2. We commit to and attempt to make all our communications with each

other and other interested parties as clear, honest, and respectful as

possible.

  3. Whilst we live in community and hold some things in common, we agree

to respect each other’s boundaries and personal space, physically,

emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

  4. All community decisions will be made consensually at a Tribal Council,

made up of all members of all ages.

  5. Whilst children’s input is valued and welcomed and will be taken into

consideration, they will be unable to vote until the Council deems them

mature enough to do so responsibly.

  6. All members will have a vote. A child’s vote being administered by its

parent, in consultation with the child when he or she is sufficiently old

enough to understand to some extent, the issues at hand. This will stay in

place until such time as the child is accepted as a full voting member of

the council.

  7. Entrance into the Community will be by consensus of the Tribal Council

based on the individual themselves regardless of their relationship with

other members, except in the case of dependant children.

  8. Each adult member agrees to meet his or her own financial commitments to

the community promptly and willingly on a fortnightly basis in advance.

These funds will be paid into a Community account from which rent to

Akapatiki, or other providers will be paid.

  9. We agree to share the paying of any extra costs relating to the

communitys needs as and when they arise in a similar prompt and willing

manner.

  10. An adult member is deemed to refer to someone who is financially

independent, and no longer completely reliant on their parent/s.

  11. We agree to use our inherent attributes and skills for the good of the

community, working in a supportive way to enable each other to meet their

own personal requirements.

  12. We recognize that only by pulling together can intentional community

be achieved.

  13. We feel that the use of alcohol on the community land is a personal

choice. However we recommend moderation with the understanding that

its use does not impact negatively on the community either individually or

as a whole in any way.

  14. All other illegal substances are expressly forbidden on the property so

as to protect the interests of the inhabitants.

  15. Should the community ever see it as important to challenge the current

laws of the land, it must be done as a unanimous group decision and only

after the implications have been thoroughly considered and accepted by

all.

  16. Whilst we understand that total self-sufficiency is not possible, we

undertake to endeavor to become as self sufficient as possible. The ways

in which we undertake this will need to be ongoingly discussed as the

opportunities arise.

  17. We understand and respect members attachment to their non-human

companions, however we reserve the right to restrict the number of pets

that are resident on the community if need arises.

  18. As the care of livestock requires the possibility of ongoing culling, it

has been decided that it is not appropriate to include them on the

community except for chickens and ducks. They must however be

restricted in numbers from the outset.

19. Land design will follow Permaculture principles where possible and

growing will include organic and/or biodynamic practices. Chemical and

GE use will be eliminated as much as possible.

20. We recognize this charter as a beginning of the process that must

continue to be evaluated through discussion in order to evolve and truly

meet the needs or the adherents. There will probably never be a time

when it will be finished.
